How to Clean and Maintain Your Clear Aligners Without Damaging Them

Dr. Bhagyalakshmi Avinash 5 Min Read Clinically Reviewed
Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible when they are new and crystal clean. However, if they aren't cared for correctly, saliva, oral bacteria, and dietary residues can quickly cause cloudiness, yellowing, and persistent odors. Here is the clinical guide to keeping your aligners pristine.

1. The Daily Aligner Cleaning Protocol

  • Rinse Every Time You Remove Them: Whenever you take out your aligners to eat, rinse them immediately under lukewarm running tap water to prevent dry saliva from crusting into plaque.
  • Gentle Brushing with a Soft Toothbrush: Use a separate soft-bristled toothbrush to gently clean the inside and outside of the trays daily.
  • Use Clear, Mild Antibacterial Soap: A drop of clear liquid antibacterial hand soap or specialized aligner cleaning foam works wonders to cut through oral biofilms without scratching.

2. What You Should NEVER Do with clear aligners

  • Never Use Abrasive Toothpaste: Regular toothpastes contain abrasive silica particles designed to polish enamel. On soft polyurethane aligners, toothpaste creates microscopic scratches that trap bacteria and make the trays look permanently cloudy.
  • Never Use Hot or Boiling Water: High heat will warp and deform the precision thermoplastic material, completely ruining the aligner's fit and stopping tooth movement.
  • Never Use Colored Mouthwashes: Soaking aligners in blue, green, or red mouthwashes will dye the clear plastic.

3. Deep Cleaning with Cleaning Crystals or retainers Tablets

Twice a week, soak your aligners in specialized Invisalign Cleaning Crystals or gentle effervescent retainers tablets for 15 minutes. This breaks down stubborn calcium deposits (tartar) and eliminates bacteria in hard-to-reach crevices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use baking soda or vinegar to clean aligners?

A mild solution of diluted white vinegar (1 part vinegar to 3 parts lukewarm water) can safely dissolve mineral deposits. Avoid baking soda, as its gritty texture can cause micro-abrasions.

Q: What should I do if my aligner turns yellow?

Soaking in aligner cleaning crystals will help lighten minor stains. Remember that you switch to a brand-new, crystal-clear set every 7 to 10 days, so the issue will resolve with your next tray.
