When you finish your final Invisalign aligner tray, your teeth look straight and your bite aligns properly. However, under the gums and microscopic bone level, the physiological transformation is far from finished.
Elastic Periodontal Fibers
Teeth are anchored in bone by thousands of microscopic elastic fibers called the periodontal ligament (PDL) and supracrestal transseptal fibers. As aligners guide teeth into new positions, these fibers stretch like rubber bands. They retain elastic memory for up to 12 months, constantly exerting microscopic tension to pull teeth back.
Bone Remineralization
During orthodontic movement, bone on the pressure side is absorbed (osteoclastic activity) and soft new osteoid bone forms on the tension side. This new bone takes 8 to 12 months to fully calcify and mineralize into rigid cortical bone. Until calcification finishes, teeth are vulnerable to drift.
