As I explained in my recent video, some teeth have deep grooves that no toothbrush can reach. These are called Pits & Fissures. But the good news? We can seal them shut before the bacteria get in.

What Are “Pits and Fissures”?
Run your tongue over your back teeth. They aren’t smooth like glass, right? They are rough and bumpy.
These bumps have deep valleys between them. In some people, these valleys (fissures) are narrower than a single bristle of a toothbrush!
- The Result: Food gets stuck deep inside.
- The Problem: You can’t brush it out.
- The Outcome: Bacteria sit there undisturbed and eat away the enamel, causing a cavity.
The Solution: Dental Sealants (The “Raincoat” for Teeth)
A Pit & Fissure Sealant is a thin, protective coating that we paint onto these deep grooves. It flows into the valleys and hardens instantly.
Think of it like putting a raincoat on the tooth. It creates a smooth surface so food slides right off instead of getting stuck.
Does it Hurt? (The #1 Question from Kids)
No. This is one of the few dental procedures that requires zero needles and zero drilling.
- We clean the tooth with a special gel.
- We paint the liquid sealant on.
- We shine a blue light to harden it. That’s it! The whole process takes just a few minutes per tooth.
Who Needs Sealants?
We highly recommend this for children as soon as their First Permanent Molars appear (usually around age 6) and again when their Second Molars appear (around age 12).
However, adults with deep grooves can benefit too! Prevention is always cheaper (and less painful) than a root canal later.
