What Are “Pits and Fissures”?
As explained in the video, when permanent teeth erupt, they often have deep grooves (fissures) on the top surface.
- The Problem: These grooves are so narrow that even a toothbrush bristle cannot reach inside to clean them.
- The Result: Food gets stuck, bacteria grow, and a cavity forms silently deep inside the tooth.
How Do Sealants Work?
Think of a sealant as a “shield” or a “raincoat” for the tooth.
- Clean & Dry: We clean the tooth surface thoroughly.
- Apply: We flow a special liquid material into the deep grooves.
- Cure: We use a special light to harden the material instantly.
The result is a smooth surface that food slides right off of. No deep grooves means no place for bacteria to hide!
Is Drilling Required?
This is the best part: Usually, NO. Unlike a filling where we have to drill out decay, sealants are a preventive measure. We simply clean the tooth and apply the protective coating. It is painless and requires no anesthesia.
(Note: If Dr. Avinash detects that decay has already started, a small amount of cleaning or a traditional filling might be needed. This is why early checking is key!)
Who Needs Sealants?
We generally recommend sealants for children between the ages of 6 and 14. This is when their permanent molars (back teeth) usually erupt. Protecting them immediately gives them the best chance of staying cavity-free for life.
